Just for clarity: how many drives are in the drobo-S, versus how many drives are in the volume MacPro Data?
Drobo S has 5 drives. MacPro has 4 drives. The one tested is a 500 gb 7200 rpm, 16mb cache

Victor, How did you get eSATA connected to your MacPro?
I bought an eSata card at OWC , it has 2 eSata ports. Works great.
Some cheap SSDs in RAID-0 will help quite nicely as well - here from my 3 years old macbook pro where I replaced the SuperDrive with a OWC Bay and two Corsair drives:
