Manifestation 4.9.2010 0 comments

The red line is the path of the protest. It started in the north, at République. Green are streets that were closed before the protest that I witnessed personally. Some streets like Rue de Turbigo did not need to be closed, since they are one-way from République. Blue is where I saw heavy police presence—rows of vans from the Gendarmerie, riot trucks (with huge cow-catchers on the front). Note that the police kept a distance from the march. I imagine that the Bastille was also closed on all sides, with police there.

To scale comparison of Paris Métro and Chicago CTA systems 0 comments

Friends still in Chicago frequently don't believe me when I explain how small the actual city of Paris is. This should help, as the Métro, like the CTA, barely leaves city limits.

Also notable is the implicit density of stations. I would guess that there is no place in the city of Paris, proper, where one is more than 500m away from a métro stop. There are giant swaths of Chicago where the nearest el stop is more than 2km away.
